Once you have created a Partial Image, you can edit how it looks and interacts with the other images and layers in the design. The transfer modes and transparency settings can create extremely interesting and varied effects with all sorts of designs.
Transfer modes determine how layers are blended with the pixels of the specified destination layer. They also decide how layers appear in the Layers Palette and how they interact with the layers beneath. In order to understand how the different transfer modes work, you need to understand the following concepts:
- Standard layer - standard layers look like and work as normal images and layers. A standard layer will function as a destination layer for embedded layers, i.e. Partial Images are embedded into them.
- Embedded layer - embedded layers are Partial Images which are created using Pick Up or Paste as Layer and take advantage of any of the transfer modes other than standard. Such layers act as floating layers whose pixels are blended with the destination layer. The way an embedded layer interacts and blends with a destination layer depends on the selected transfer mode.
All transfer modes can be used on any layer type (spot layer, CMYK, RGB image).
- Create your Partial Images as per the Creating Partial Images article.
- Hold down ^ (control key) on the keyboard and click on the small transfer mode icon in the Layers Palette:
- Select the mode you want to use from the list which appears. The different modes will have a different effect depending on whether you are working on RGB or CMYK images. Therefore we recommend you experiment with them until you achieve the result you want. The movie below demonstrates how effective the 'Min' mode can be for removing the background of Partial Images when overlayed with other images.
