Changing the transparency of an individual colour chip

Printing Special Inks

Individual colours in the colour file can be given specific transparencies. This can be particularly useful for effects such as metallics and the simulation of a metallic ink. A colour with a low transparency can be used to simulate the effect of an opaque or semi opaque metallic ink.

If a colour has been given a specified transparency, then that transparency will be used (in preference to the layer transparency) when a layer using that colour is displayed in the design.

  1. Select a chip to use and go to Colour Menu > Edit Chip.
  2. Enter the required percentage in the Transparency field and click OK. This allows you to use a colour more like an ink, where the transparency is an attribute of the colour.

When a colour with a specific transparency is chosen on a layer in AVA, it will display the transparency figure in brackets in the Layers Palette and if you are displaying the gamut warnings on your colour blocks, a T warning triangle will appear on the layer block to indicate that the colour has an individual transparency setting.

Any other layer showing the same colour will also have this transparency. Dragging this colour to another layer, or a different colourway takes the transparency with it.

To remove the transparency from a colour

  1. Go to Colour Menu > Edit Chip.
  2. Delete the contents of the transparency field so that it is empty.
Delete

Note: Do not enter 0 in the transparency field to cancel the setting as this will set the transparency to zero rather than cancelling it.
