Postscript printer driver

Printing through third party rips

There are so many printers out there, it would be impossible for us to drive them all directly with the AVA Digital Print Rip. The AVA Postscript Driver, and the AVA TIFF Printer Driver acts as a bridge between AVA and your third party rip.

AVA Postscript Printer Driver is a solution we can offer to some of our customers printing to through a third party rip such as long as the rip can receive Postscript files. If it does not, perhaps the AVA TIFF Printer driver is a better solution for you.

How do I print through the AVA Postscript Printer?

  1. Go to File Menu > Printer Type and select AVA Postscript from the side menu.
  2. Go to File Menu > Page Set up. When you go to Page Set up for the first time, you will be told there is no PPD selected. PPD stands for Postscript Printer Description. It describes the fonts, paper sizes, resolutions and other capabilities which are standard to the printer.
  3. Click OK to this message and the following window opens:
  4. Click Open PPD… near the bottom of the window and select the PPD which came with your printer (usually supplied on CD).
  5. Select the page size you wish to use or click Set From Document.  This will set the page to the size of the design you are printing.
  6. Set the Image Resolution to the resolution of the file.
  7. Choose to flip (for Transfer printing) or rotate the design.
  8. The Print Quality is set by the PPD.
  9. Choose which ColourSpace to use.  This should reflect the colorspace of the layers within the file, i.e. Greyscale, RGB, CMYK.
  10. If your file is CMYK, you can select an ink setting to print through.
  11. Choose the Output Format.  This can be ESP or Postscript and will depend on which file types your Rip can read, then click OK.
  12. Go to File Menu > Print.  The following window will open:

  • Save As… - should be used if you this is the first print of the day.  It enables you to define the path to which you are printing these files. It also provides you with the opportunity to rename the print file.
  • Save - can be used for subsequent prints which are to be printed to the same location because the path for these prints has already been set up.

We would recommend printing to a folder on computer the rip is running on so that they print files can either be printed immediately, or queued by the operator of the rip.
