Paste as layer: Building new designs using Partial Images

Designing using Partial Images

Essentially, Pick up and Paste as Layer do the same thing, but they do it in slightly different ways. Pick up creates Partial Images in one simple step, and only works within the same document, whereas Paste as Layer requires the information to be copied first and must be used when working between multiple files, although it can be used when working within one document, if you prefer this method.

Surfaces

  1. Select a motif in your design.
  2. Go to Edit Menu > Copy (⌘C) and then activate the destination design.
  3. Go to Edit Menu > Paste as Layer.

The motif will appear in the list of layers as a new Partial Image. This has the benefit of using much less memory than a whole layer and will ensure that the final file size is kept to a minimum. You can paste as many Partial Images on a destination document as you need to build up a new design.

Tip: Use the Layer Tabs in the Layers Palette to neatly organise your Partial Images. This is a great way from viewing them separately from any other layers, grids or vector layers which may appear in your file. To learn more, read the 'Layers Palette: Organising layers into tabs' article.

Partial Images created from a different design using Paste as Layer will, by default be placed in the top left of the Design Window. If you would prefer the information to be placed in a more specific location within the design when pasted, simply select that area of the design before selecting Paste as Layer and the new Partial Image will be placed in that location.

Note: The motif is automatically transferred in Merge mode. This means it is considered to be an ’embedded’ layer in the list of layers that can be blended with the destination layer (the main image). You can change the position of partial images using the Origin Tool. The transparency and transfer mode can also be changed to blend the Partial Image with the pixels of the destination layer. To learn more, read the 'Transfer Modes: Blending Partial Images into the design' article.
