Stipple: Create a 1 bit layer of stipple texture from visible information

Create a 1 bit layer of stipple texture from whatever is visible on screen.

This method of separation will create a 1 bit layer of stipple texture from whatever is visible on screen. This can  either be an image or a tonal layer, or a combination of the two. It is useful for creating textured design effects and can put movement in a layer to prevent halos when engraved.

  1. Open a tonal design and go to Separate Menu > Stipple.
  2. In the window which opens, click on Preview. A temporary 1 bit layer will appear in the Layers Palette. This hides whatever is currently visible. While Preview is on, you can adjust the various stipple parameters to automatically see the changes. By clicking Preview off, it shows the image and deletes the temporary stipple layer.
  3. Select Fine Stipple to make the stipple size finer. Using the sliders, you can adjust the amount of stipple on the design.

    • Spacing - moving the slider to the right, increases the spacing between each stipple dot. For example, if the slider showed 4 this indicates that there is a 4 pixel spacing between the centre of each dot on screen.
    • Random - moving the slider to the right, creates a more random stipple effect. For example, if the slider showed 0 then the stipple effect would be a regimented grid effect. By moving the slider to 4, this creates a random effect of + or – 4 pixels in any direction.
    • Passes - moving the slider to the right, creates more passes, multiplying the amount of pixels in the stipple area.
    • Noise - moving the slider to the right adds more noise to the separation, resulting in a much smoother effect on gradients such as vignettes and helps to avoid visible tonal steps being produced in production.

Change the curve to create more variation in the stipple, by darkening or lightening the stipple effect. Hold down ^ (control key) and click in the curve to bring up the contextual menu allowing it to be reset back to the original line or save or open an existing curve.

When you are satisfied with the Stipple separation, click Accept. A permanent stipple layer will be created.

Note: This does not apply the gamma to the original image or layer.
